Talk to a provider about skin treatments

Facials, peels and microneedling each work in a different way. A licensed provider decides what is suitable for you at a consultation.

Where skin treatments fit among med spa services

A med spa usually offers four groups of services: skin treatments, injectables, laser hair removal and body treatments. Skin treatments are the group aimed at the skin itself, mostly on the face, neck and hands.

Inside that group you will usually find:

  • facials of different kinds
  • chemical peels in a range of strengths
  • microneedling, sometimes paired with a topical product
  • light-based treatments such as intense pulsed light or LED

Some people ask about one treatment by name. Others only know what is bothering them about their skin. Either is a fine place to start a consultation request, and a licensed provider takes it from there.

Why your skin type matters

Skin type is one of the first things a licensed provider considers. Oily, dry, combination and sensitive skin can respond differently to the same product. Skin tone matters too: some peels and light-based devices carry a higher risk of dark or light patches on deeper skin tones, so a provider may choose a different option or a milder setting.

History counts as much as type. A provider will want to know if you scar easily, form raised scars, get cold sores, or have had a reaction to a peel or product before. Tell them about all of it, even if it seems minor. That is how they decide what is suitable.

Preparing questions about cost and visits

Price and timing questions are easier to ask when you have them written down. Cost is set by each provider, so ask for it at the consultation. Useful questions to note:

  • How many visits do people usually have for this, and how far apart?
  • Is the consultation itself charged?
  • What does aftercare involve, and what products would I need?
  • Are there times of year when this treatment is less suitable?
  • What happens if I need to reschedule?

Add notes on your skin, health and medicines, and you will have most of what the provider needs.

Questions about skin treatments

What is the difference between a facial and a chemical peel?

A facial is a hands-on service built around cleansing, exfoliation and masks. A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin for a set time, in strengths that range from light to deeper. Peels usually come with more specific aftercare. A provider can explain which, if either, suits your skin.

Can I have a skin treatment if I am pregnant?

Some skin treatments and products are usually avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and others may still be an option. Tell the provider at the start of the consultation, and they will decide what is suitable. For questions about your pregnancy, your own doctor or midwife is the right person to ask.

How many visits do skin treatments take?

It depends on the treatment, your skin and what you want to ask about. Some people have a single facial. Peels, microneedling and light-based treatments are often planned as a series. A licensed provider can tell you what is typical for a given treatment, without promising a set number.
