What a laser session usually looks like
Each session follows a familiar pattern. The area is shaved beforehand, often at home. You and the provider wear eye protection. The provider may apply a cooling gel or use a device with built-in cooling. They then move the handpiece across the area in a pattern, sending short pulses of light.
People often describe the sensation as a snap against the skin, and providers can talk about comfort options. Aftercare usually involves sun protection and avoiding heat on the area for a short while. The full plan is a series of these sessions, with the number varying from person to person.
Who may operate the laser
Rules on who may operate a hair removal laser are set by each state, and they differ widely. Some states limit it to physicians and nurses. Others allow trained technicians under supervision. In California, ask the provider how those rules apply to them.
Practical questions to ask: Who will do my sessions? What training do they have on this device? Who supervises them? Who checks my skin before the first session? What happens if I have a reaction? A licensed provider should answer these plainly and decide what is suitable for you.
What to ask the office before you go
Some offices give instructions ahead of a laser consultation, especially if a test patch might happen. It is worth calling or emailing to ask:
- Should I shave the area beforehand, and when?
- Should I avoid waxing, plucking or hair removal cream?
- Should I avoid sun or self-tanner first?
- Do I need to skip lotion or deodorant on the day?
- Will there be a test patch?
Follow the office's own instructions over anything general. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without checking with whoever prescribed it.
Questions about laser hair removal
Does skin tone affect laser hair removal?
Yes. Skin tone and hair color affect which device and settings fit. Some devices are generally used for lighter skin, and others, such as Nd:YAG lasers, are often chosen for deeper skin tones. Ask the provider which device they use and why it suits you.
Is laser hair removal an option for blond, gray or red hair?
Very light hair can be hard for many lasers to target, because most devices rely on pigment in the hair. Some providers may still discuss options. Ask plainly at the consultation, and a licensed provider will tell you whether it is suitable.
Should I shave before a session?
Many providers ask you to shave the area shortly before each session and to avoid waxing, plucking or hair removal creams for a while beforehand. Instructions differ, so follow the ones your provider gives you.
